exhibition extended

Scholes Street Studio is pleased to present works by Jeffrey Bishop, a Brooklyn-based abstract artist whose recent paintings of convoluted and exploding forms seem to convey a sonic world.

Jeffrey Bishop's current works, though essentially confronting compositional aspects of abstract painting, have a very resonant and sonic quality. He describes this connection between the visual and aural thus: "Music of the very contemporary kind, and the latest jazz especially, when it is jagged and dissonant, drives my studio practice as much as anything. Energy, rhythm, improvisation; patterns and riffs that replicate and evaporate are values that infuse the work and suit the nature of abstraction." He is also currently on the Board of Trustees of Bang on the Can, a performing arts organization that supports experimental music.

On exhibition at Scholes Street Studio is a group of paintings from the Turk series with images that look like an explosive saxophone note that blasts through an initially cohering sound to a chaotic space behind. Also shown are large works on paper from the new Joy Revision series which riff off of Joy Division's album cover art of radio pulses.  Bishop temporally unfolds the motif across wall-length scrolls as if it were a score.

The reception will conclude with a short performance of compositions and improvisations for bass clarinet by Ken Thomson, a composer, clarinetist, saxophonist and a member of  Gutbucket, Bang on a Can All-Stars and other ensembles.
