Morton Feldman’s Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello was composed in May, 1987, three months before the composer’s death. While often overshadowed by more well known works such as String Quartet No. 2 and Piano and String Quartet, Piano, this work is one of Feldman’s great masterpieces from the 1980s.
Clocking in at 75 minutes, the piece has all the unmistakable hallmarks of Feldman’s late style: the scope, the patience, and the unapologetic beauty are all present in this rarely performed work.
