Connection Works presents
Wide Open Works (WOW) concert series
WORKS
Michel Gentile - flute
Daniel Kelly - piano
Rob Garcia – drums
“Michel Gentile, Daniel Kelly and Rob Garcia, aka WORKS, bring their gift for improvisation and a vocabulary that enlarges the conversation with depth, humor and discovery that reminds us of why we are drawn to this music in the first place” (Paul Pines, Lake George Festival). WORKS is the driving force behind the vibrant non- profit organization Connection Works. This group has exploited its unique instrumentation of flute, piano and drums to forge a distinct and powerful musical voice, putting the “focus on the dynamic writing and deep simpatico of the trio itself” (The Village Voice). WORKS performs primarily as a trio, but has also placed itself at the center of several adventurous projects, from performing with classically influenced projects such as chamber orchestra and string quartet; to commissioning big band pieces featuring the trio; to playing with a long line of esteemed guests, such as jazz heavyweights Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Dave Liebman, Joseph Jarman, Scott Colley, Donny McCaslin and many more. Their self-titled CD was named one of the best albums of 2013 by the prestigious Downbeat Magazine.

Shakespeare in Jazz
Daniel Kelly - piano/composer
Nicole Zuraitis - vocals
Shakespeare in Jazz: All the World’s a Song is an engaging celebration of Shakespeare's work, offering an exciting new way to experience his genius. Great for those discovering his plays for the first time and for Shakespeare aficionados alike! Throughout the concert, audience members hear original songs based on Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Hamlet and many more.
This intimate duo performance of Shakespeare in Jazz features the tremendous talents of Grammy-nominated vocalist, pianist and songwriter Nicole Zuraitis and composer and pianist Daniel Kelly, whose music has been declared “powerfully moving” by Time Out New York. Along with touring throughout Southeast Asia and India as a part of the Kennedy Center and US State Department-sponsored Jazz Ambassador program, Kelly has brought his unique talent to performances with Grammy award-winning jazz legends Michael Brecker and Joe Lovano, hip-hop star Lauryn Hill, and modern classical giants the Bang on a Can All-Stars, to name a few.

Monroe Golden
Approaching the end of a five-year residency in NYC, this concert of overtone-informed music — combining acoustic experimentation, proportional structures, and fanciful handiwork — features some of the musicians Monroe Golden has been privileged to work with during that span.
Compositions on the program explore overtone relationships in an equal-tempered context, natural harmonics of microtonally tuned fundamentals, non-systematic derivations from text, extended Just Intonation, and the juxtaposition of tuning and temperament systems with fixed media and controlled pitch drift.
