Infrequent Seams
Double Album Release Concert
Lily Guarneros Maase
Ben Richter
Double Album Release: Lily Guarneros Maase & Ben Richter, with James Ilgenfritz and guests
Lily Guarneros Maase y Curandera
Founded as an homage to seminal female guitarists Elizabeth Cotten, Memphis Minnie and Rosetta Tharpe, Curandera is a contemporary folk ensemble dedicated to transforming misogynist themes in ancient lore into tales of empowerment, redemption and hope. Multi-genre guitarist and composer Lily Guarneros Maase returns to New York after a 5-year hiatus to premiere selections from their 2023 Infrequent Seams double album blood::face::teeth::bones, and a preview of the opening movements from their forthcoming folk opera reimagining the Mexican leyenda de La Llorona, Tale of the Bloody River. An extension of Mx. Maase’s work as faculty at the California Institute of the Arts, Curandera Ensemble features two former students, Lucas Helfman (bass) and Sage Henriksen (voice). They are joined for this performance only by special guests James Ilgenfritz (bass), Nikki D’Agostino (saxophone) and Natti Vogel (voice).
Composer-accordionist Ben Richter is joined by bassist James Ilgenfritz for the world premiere of Laramidia, a just-intonation accordion composition that creates an alien tonal landscape alternating among timbral fluctuations, melody and drone, and gradual resolution of shimmering, pulsing microtonal intervals. Portions of Laramidia are featured on Ben’s new 2CD Aurogeny (December 22, Infrequent Seams), collecting music inspired by nonhuman consciousness that orients toward new orders of magnitude in musical parameters to auralize the vast and infinitesimal timescales we do not experience in everyday life.
Composer and contrabassist James Ilgenfritz begins the evening with Almostness, a work for solo 5-string contrabass (retuned in a Just Intonation scordatura) with Autonomous Mechanical Instrument Array (AMIA): a set of up to twelve mechanical instruments that play themselves in reaction to his movements.

Pascal le Boeuf
Ritual Being
Hailed as “sleek, new” and “hyper-fluent” by The New York Times, GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer Pascal Le Boeuf continues to blaze a trail of forward-thinking creativity with
his latest album "Ritual Being." In realizing these bold, hybrid forms of new music and jazz,
Le Boeuf surrounds himself with like-minded players of the highest order, including violinist Charles Yang, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, bassist Martin Nevin, and drummer Peter Kronrief to create
a program of extraordinary rhythmic urgency, contrapuntal density and breathtaking imagination.

The Outside In
The Outside In isn’t your grandma’s modern jazz band. Rocking out since 2022, soaring melodies, passionate solos, head-banging grooves, intimate and reflective ballads all define the music, largely composed by pianist Ethan Ostrow. The band can be described as a blend between the Brian Blade Fellowship, the Pat Metheny Group, and something completely new. Featuring some of the most exciting up-and-coming musicians in New York, they are quickly establishing themselves with their deep, lush, and powerful sound.

Shawn Jaeger
It’s 1990. Mary Grace is driving home from work. As she drives, she speaks into a tape recorder. She’s talking to Chuck, her husband. She’s 35 years old. Shawn Jaeger’s "Hi, Chuck" tells the story of Mary Grace, Chuck and their family through Mary Grace’s recordings. "Jaeger pieces together the artifacts of his mother’s audio diary to create a gripping character study and triptych of the common and uncommon days of a typical 1990s American family” (Stephen George, Louisville Public Media). He uses Mary Grace’s voice as an instrument, creating beats by repeating snippets of her speech. And he co-narrates the story along with her—filling in the plot and revealing a few surprises—and plays violin.

The Vex Collection
&
Wet Ink Ensemble
An evening of music co-presented by
Vicente Atria and Mat Muntz's "The Vex Collection" and Wet Ink Ensemble.
Imagining alternate pasts, presents, and futures, The Vex Collection uses unheard-of combinations of traditional instruments, newly devised musical contraptions, and a philosophy of mad-scientific experimentation
in their exploration of uncharted sonic space.
This concert celebrates the release of The Vex Collection's album on Carrier Records.
This project is supported in part by NYSCA.
